Statement on Admissions
The staff and governors at Mayfield School are committed to working positively with families, local authorities and other professionals to admit children and young people to Mayfield School who have one of more of the following special educational needs:
- Severe Learning Difficulties
- Moderate Learning Difficulties
- Profound and multiple learning Difficulties
We recognise that these broad categories encompass a wide and diverse range of individual needs. We also acknowledge that there are many syndromes and conditions that may not be captured within them. Mayfield will seek to work with individual families helping where we can to place children with us.
We will always strive to recognise the individuality of every case introduced to us, being open and honest with other professionals about our ability to provide a learning environment for the child or young person.
The majority of children and young people coming to Mayfield will have the protection of a statement of EHC plan that outlines their personal needs and targets to be met and reviewed each year. For a small number of children there will be a need to access Mayfield School in order for an assessment to take place. This will either because a statement is in the process of being finalised or when the current needs of the family outweigh the requirement for a prolonged admission process.
Due to the make up of the local and wider community that we serve, the number of pupils on the school role will vary through the year. At times this may mean that the number of pupils on role will exceed the number of places funded by the Local Authority. The Headteacher is encouraged to be as flexible as possible in negotiation with the LA providing opportunity for debate and discussion on each and every child seeking a place prior to a decision about a final placement being made.
In order to enhance Mayfield’s broad and diverse curriculum all pupils are able to access a comprehensive programme of educational visits.
What Our Parents Say
Thank you Nicita for being a good support and teacher.
I’m so proud of him and thank you for your belief in my son, you are a great teacher.
A very big thank you to everyone at Mayfield for making the carol service, yet again another memorable occasion. I think that the standing ovation was well deserved and I would ask that you pass on my personal thanks to all of the children involved.
I am immensely proud of what he can do now. It was a difficult decision to move him from mainstream to special, but I am so pleased I did, as it has transformed him. He has made such progress.
