Allotments – in partnership with Kingstanding Food Community
Rashida has been working regularly on the allotments in Kingstanding where we have our own patch to cultivate. In October Rashida prepared the ground for planting some winter crops such as broad beans and Spanish onions. She took part in weeding, raking, digging and planting. On return to our patch in April we could see that some of our crops were growing – along with the weeds again! Rashida set about getting the ground ready again for planting some more crops such as potatoes. Rashida has learnt some important practical skills as well as working alongside other volunteers and practising her social skills.
A week’s placement in a catering kitchen.
Abdullah has always talked about being a chef and we were able to offer him a block placement, every day for one week. He worked in the catering kitchen that served the students and staff at UCB. On arrival each morning he signed in, collected his locker key and changed into his chef whites. Abdullah then participated in a variety of tasks such as preparing vegetables for salads, making pizza and creating a variety of side dishes such as stuffing balls. He was also able to serve customers at the counter. He learnt important things linked to health and hygiene and safety in the kitchen. Abdullah really enjoyed his week at UCB and made lots of friends with the staff and students, he made an excellent impression and was given a glowing report by the head chef.
